Workshop Artists
Roy Nagatoshi
Roy was born in the United States but spent most of his early years in Japan, then returned to the U.S. in 1957. His first encounter with bonsai was in 1959 when he worked with his father, Shigeru, learning the techniques of making bonsai. He also worked extensively with John Naka.
In 1965, he and his parents opened the Fuji Bonsai Nursery in Sylmar, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. In 1975 he received a B.S. degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Cal Poly University. His first lecture to a local bonsai club was in 1976 and since that time he has lectured and conducted workshops throughout this country and internationally. Roy was credited for creating bonsai for the motion picture, Karate Kid III, in 1990 and was also involved in a bonsai educational video produced by Puget Sound Bonsai Association
Roy is a proud member of California Bonsai Society. He served eight years as the President of the Society and also chaired two anniversary conventions of the Society.
Young Choe
Young Choe studied traditional art-ink painting and calligraphy-in her native Korea before she moved to the United States. While volunteering at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, she was able to bring her artistic talent together with her knowledge of horticulture to create Kusamono. She traveled to Japan to study this unique art form with the master Kusamono artist, Keiko Yamane.
Many of Young’s plantings can be viewed daily in the museum’s bonsai pavilions. In the world outside the Museum, she works at the U.S. National Arboretum as a propagation horticulturist. She will be displaying Kusamono in the upcoming Autumn Arts of Nature exhibit in September-October 2009 at the National Arboretum.
